Enter your grades and units to calculate your General Weighted Average.
GWA Calculator
Your GWA:
The General Weighted Average is an important and needed part of your education. Whether you are a college, school or university student, you need to calculate your academic GWA. If you want to check your academic performance or apply for a scholarship, then a GWA is required. But how to calculate it, is it different from GPA and many more? Here, you get all the knowledge about it.
What is GWA?
GWA is basically the General Weighted Average that is used by the Philippines’ educational system and students for calculating performance. By GWA, we calculate the overall educational performance of a student. It is calculated by your achieved grades and the number of unitsin every subject. All the Philippines students can use it and calculate their GWA. As lower your grades, as better your performance. Because many of the Philippines’ institutes use 1.0 GWA as the highest and 5.0 as the failing.
How to USE GWA Calculator?
The GWA calculator is the best way to calculate the Average Weightage of your whole education journey. You can calculate it online or manually. Whether you are a college, school, or university student, you can calculate your GWA by the same method.
- Enter grades and units in the below boxes.
- If you need to add more subjects then clock on the “Add Subject” option.
- Click on the Calculate option. The result will show on the screen.
Formula: Multiply your obtained grade for each subject by the credit hours of that subject and add up the results. Then divide it by the added credit hours of all subjects.
Why Use GWA Online Calculator?
Using an online GWA Calculator has more benefits than the manual or offline calculation does. Here are the benefits and reasons for using the GWA Online Calculator;
- Easy to use and understand.
- Save your time.
- Calculations are error-free.
- Academic performance Tracking is easy.
- Useful for applying for a scholarship.
GPA Calculation Formula
The formula for calculating the GPA is;
GPA = {Sum (subject grade x credit hours)} / (sum of credit hours)
Example: Take an example of a student who enrols in 5 subjects: English, Mathematics, Physics, Computer and Biology.
- Credit hours for each subject are different, like;
- English – 3 credits/hrs.
- Mathematics – 2 credits/hrs.
- Physics – 3 credits/hrs.
- Computer – 4 credits/hrs.
- Biology – 2 credits/hrs.
- The grades of the students in these subjects are English (A+), Mathematics (B), Physics (A-), Computer (A+), and Biology (B+). For calculating GWA, we convert grades into numbers. So, according to the standard scale, A+ corresponds to 4.0, A- to 3.7, B+ to 3.0
- Now, multiply the grades by the credit hours.
- English = 4.0×3 = 12
- Mathematics= 3.0×2 = 6
- Physics=3.7×3 = 11.1
- Computer=4.0×4 = 16
- Biology=3.0×2 =6
- Now add all these calculations and divide by the total credit hours.
- The sum of all calculations= 51.1
- Total Credit hours = 3+2+3+4+2 = 14
- Division = 51.1/ 14 = 3.65
- So our student’s GPA is 3.65.
Hopefully, you understood the formula. Now, similarly, put your grades and credit hours in the formula and calculate your GPA.
Methods to Calculate GWA
You can calculate the GWA by the following methods;
- Manual Computation
You can calculate the GWA manually by using the grade mark and credit hours, or units. Multiply the grade marks by the credit hours/ units. Then add the products of all subjects and divide them by the sum of units. In this way, you can manually calculate your GWA. It’s a little bit tricky but easy.
- Online Calculator
It is the most convenient, fast, and easy way to calculate the GWA. The online GWA Calculator is user-friendly, and the users have to just input their grades and subject credits. Your GWA is calculated quickly and shown on the screen.
- Offline Tool
Besides online and manual computation, you can also calculate your GWA through tools like Excel and Google Sheets. You have to use these tools and generate columns for subjects, credits, grades and weightage. Used the built-in functions like SUM, PRODUCT, and MUL. You can generate the formula in the formula bar of a spreadsheet.
Difference Between GWA and GPA
The differences between the GWA and GPA are as follows;
- GWA stands for General Weighted Average, and GPA stands for Grade Point Average.
- GWA is used to calculate the average of the overall academic performance of the student. Where GPA is used to calculate the average of academic performance for a specific period.
- GWA is calculated by including all subjects and the other curricula where GPA is calculated for certain subjects, like the elective or minor subjects.
What is the Passing Rate of GWA?
The passing rate of GWA usually depends on the grading system of each university. A GWA of 3.0 or higher is equivalent to a GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 5.0 scale, and it is considered the passing rate. Different universities have different passing rates, so it’s better to check the passing rate of your university. Maybe it’s different, or maybe similar. Like the University of the Philippines uses the same 5.0 scale, but he declares 3.0 as the passing scale.

College Grading Systems in the Philippines
Different universities and institutions in the Philippines use various college grading systems, which influence how GWA is computed.
4-Point Scale
- Grades range from 0.00 to 4.00, where 4.00 is the highest mark.
- Commonly used in universities adopting a GPA-like system.
5-Point Scale
- Grades range from 1.00 to 5.00, where 1.00 is the highest mark and 5.00 indicates failure.
- Widely used in traditional Philippine universities.
Percentage and Letter Grades
- Some institutions use percentage-based grades (e.g., 60% to 100%).
- Letter grades (A, B, C, etc.) may be used with corresponding numeric values for GWA computation.
FAQs
Q: How to calculate your GPA in college in the Philippines?
A: To calculate the GPA in college,use this formula:
(Sum (subject grade x credit hours)) / (sum of 0) credit hours)
Q: What is a 1.5 grade college in the Philippines?
A: The Philippine colleges have a grading scale of 1.00 – 5.00, and the lowest grade is 1.00; it is considered the highest one. So if you got a 1.5 grade, which is equivalent to 90%, that is a good grade.
Q: What is 1.75 GWA equivalent in college?
A: If you score 1.75 GWA, then it’s good because it is equivalent to 90 – 92 per cent.
Q: How to compute the weighted average in college?
A: The weighted calculation as a system is calculated by this formula;
{Sum (subject grade x credit hours)} / (sum of credit hours)
Q: What is 90% in GWA?
A: The percentage fell from 90 – 96% is a good performance level. The grade of 90% is B+, and these grades are useful for identifying the percentage
GWA and GPA are two terms for calculating the academic results with a slight difference. GWA is calculated for the whole academic progress, where GPA is the performance over a specific time. How to find both of them, what the difference is, and how to calculate it all are described in detail. Now you can easily understand it and calculate it as well.
